Ofcom Proposes Text-To-Switch Plans So Mobile Customers Can Easily Dump Their Network Providers

"Our "text-to-switch" plans would give greater control to mobile customers about when and how they switch, and prevent losing providers from delaying and frustrating the switching process".

But today, Ofcom, the UK's telecoms regulator, has revealed plans to force firms to make it quicker, easier and cheaper to move customer contracts.

In order to minimise costs that could trickle down to the consumer, Ofcom settled on the "auto-switch" process, which will cost less than half as much over ten years.

Anyone looking to switch using the new system would simply text, then receive a text back. The switch can be completed within one working day. In turn, they will be sent switching codes.

"Our customers save an average of £152 when changing provider so we hope that the proposal is adopted by the industry, making it easier for everyone to get a better deal", Kramer added.

Now anyone wishing to change provider has to make a call.

Fox News Fires Bob Beckel Over Alleged Racist Remark
When the IT worker filed a complaint, Beckel attempted to intimidate him to withdraw it, Wigdor and Christensen said. This is the second time Fox News has terminated Beckel, who was the co-host of its primetime program, " The Five ".

The body has also introduced a ban on charges after the switch date, which it says will save customers around £10m per year. This means customers would no longer have to pay for their old and new service at the same time after they have switched.

A consolation period for the proposal package is underway until 5pm June 30, and Ofcom expects to have published its final decision on the proposals in the autumn. In the same breathe, they'll also notify you of any early exit fees and outstanding device costs you may be on the hook for, or remind you of your remaining credit balance if you're on pay-as-you-go.

Ofcom said this will save United Kingdom mobile phone customers around GBP 10 million every year. One in five of them temporarily lost their service, while one in 10 had difficulties contacting their current supplier or keeping their phone number.

The new proposals mean Ofcom's previous preferred option, a simpler one-stage process is being dropped.

Latest figures published last year showed that there were an estimated 47 million mobile phone contracts in the United Kingdom, and approximately 5.9 million people had never switched provider at all, nor considered switching in the previous year.
