US imposes sanctions in joint action with Saudi Arabia

Hashem Safieddine head of Hezbollah's executive council second left is seen in a southern suburb of Beirut Lebanon. The Trump administration imposed its first terrorism sanctions jointly with Saudi Arabia

The United States Treasury Department also added Safieddine to its counter-terrorism blacklist on Friday, a day before U.S. President Donald Trump travels to Saudi Arabia.

The sanctions, put forth by the assets control office and the State Department, prohibit US companies and Americans from doing business with the two men, blocks their assets in the United States and places them as high-profile targets for law enforcement worldwide.

The government of Saudi Arabia joined the United States in sanctioning Safieddine, the State Department noted.

Hashem Safieddine is head of the executive council of Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed Lebanese armed movement which Washington has branded a "foreign terrorist organisation". "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia designated Safieddine under its Law of Terrorism Crimes and Financing and Royal Decree A/44", the release stated.

The Saudi government today designated a Leader of Hezbollah, whose name is Hashem Safieddine - born in 1964 in Tyre area off southern Lebanon - since he is responsible for committing operations in the interest of Hezbollah in the Middle East, providing advice to launch terrorist operations, and support Alasd regime. As a result, any of his assets held in Saudi Arabia are frozen, and transfers through the Kingdom's financial sector, are prohibited.

Al-Isawi, who is also known as Abu Usama al-Masri, has been leading the Islamic State's affiliate in the Sinai Peninsula since August 2016.

IS's affiliate, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, has an active presence in large swaths of territory in the Sinai, which borders the Gaza Strip and Israel.

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia today classified Hashem Safieddine, 53, as a Hezbollah supporter against the backdrop of his responsibility for terrorist operations throughout the Middle East. The Saudis also accuse Iran and Hezbollah of fanning the war in Yemen by supporting the Houthi rebels.

Today's actions notify the US public and the worldwide community that Safieddine and al-Isawi pose a serious risk of committing acts of terrorism that threaten the national security and foreign policy of the United States. Designations of terrorist individuals and groups expose and isolate organizations and individuals and result in denial of access to the USA financial system.
