Trump to Muir: Special counsel 'hurts our country terribly'

Closing Indexes Summary May 19

Former FBI director Robert Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to lead the probe which will also look into "related matters". During Thursday's meeting, it led at least one senator to believe the probe has now turned into a criminal investigation.

"Based upon the unique circumstances, the public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command", Rosenstein said in a statement on Wednesday.

President Donald Trump described himself the victim of a "witch hunt" on Thursday morning, a day after the Department of Justice appointed a special counsel to investigate possible collusion between Trump associates and the Russian government to meddle in the 2016 presidential election. "This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!" he said.

Trump later revealed to NBC News that he thought of Comey as a "showboat" and "grandstander", and felt his inquiry was part of a "made-up story" - contradicting what his top aides had told reporters earlier in the week that the firing had nothing to do with Russian Federation.

One senior White House official who was present when Trump was informed of the Justice Department's decision to appoint Robert Mueller, a former prosecutor who served as the Federal Bureau of Investigation director from 2001 to 2013, as special counsel described Mr Trump as "unbelievably calm and measured". And House and Senate investigators had invited Comey back to Congress to explain what happened - although Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz declared on Twitter that he had trouble finding Comey to invite him to testify to the oversight committee he chairs.

The White House had been continually resistant to the idea of a special prosecutor.

The Republican leader, who has struggled to shake off suspicions that Russian Federation helped put him in the White House, has been accused of seeking to block the investigation by firing FBI chief James Comey. "I think it is time we do whatever is necessary that when this is over, we give the American people the confidence that justice, either way it goes, has been served".

Asked if Mueller's appointment would preempt his own request for Comey information, the Iowa Republican replied, "I don't know".
