Trump to head overseas without announcing new FBI director

Trump had previously set a self-imposed soft deadline to name James Comey's replacement, but that will pass once he sets off on a four-country, nine-day tour of the Middle East and Europe. He said an announcement could come "soon" and that former Sen. The White House said Friday that Trump will not announce a candidate before he leaves the country.
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said the same on Capitol Hill Friday, telling reporters that Lieberman is a "wonderful man", but Trump should steer clear of politics in his Federal Bureau of Investigation hiring. That would surely include Trump's firing last week of FBI Director James Comey. Comey was overseeing the FBI's investigation into Russia's role in the presidential election, including ties between Russian government officials and Trump associates.
Trump spoke on Thursday at the White House as the Justice Department official who appointed a special counsel to independently lead a Trump-Russia investigation briefed the entire Senate in private at the Capitol. Trump has denounced the probe as a "witch hunt".
But Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., who holds Lieberman's old seat, repeated the same sentiment heard from other Democrats on the Hill, including moderate Sen.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., called Lieberman a "pillar of credibility." Sen.
But several Democratic senators said during a caucus lunch Thursday that they would not support Lieberman, according to a person familiar with the meeting who declined to be identified because the lunch was private. In 2016, he was already sucking up to Trump when he praised the choice of Michael Flynn as national security adviser.
Burr says the committee wants to hear from Comey on his role in the development of the USA intelligence agencies' assessment that Russian Federation interfered in last year's election.
A November 25 news release from Trump's transition team quoted Lieberman praising Trump's selection of K.T. McFarland as deputy national security adviser. Lieberman testified in support of Sessions at his January confirmation hearing. He made headlines in 2000 as Vice President Al Gore's running mate in a contest that made him the first national Jewish candidate.
Even Democrats who were sympathetic to Lieberman's policy impulses regularly cringed at his cheerful cluelessness in dealing with an increasingly extreme Republican Party during the 2000s, capped by his willingness to commit the political equivalent of the unforgivable Sin Against the Holy Ghost - his endorsement of the GOP's presidential candidate in 2008.
Another thing noted by Politico: Lieberman endorsed John McCain, the Republican nominee, over Barack Obama in 2008. He has served as co-chairman of No Labels, a centrist group that promotes bipartisanship.
"If they wanted me, I certainly would be honored, but I really don't think that's going to happen", Keating, 73, told The Oklahoman after his interview at the White House. He has also advocated investigating news outlets for reporting on classified information, and once defended waterboarding by saying "it's not like putting burning coals on people's bodies".
Mueller, a former federal prosecutor at the Justice Department, was confirmed as FBI director days before the September 11, 2001, attacks that would ultimately shape his tenure.
'Bobby Three Sticks' Mueller to probe Russia-Trump imbroglio
The role was to investigate and prosecute - in a court of law - possible violations of federal law by high-level officials. And if Mueller finds enough evidence, he can seek an indictment against the suspect or suspects from a federal grand jury.

Bill O'Reilly Pays Tribute to Ailes on Podcast
Those sentiments were jarring to me because I grew up admiring and respecting the Daily News, the Journal and other newspapers. O'Reilly's firing last month was the most damaging; he'd been the network's top-rated personality for most of its existence.
