Pressed on whether he asked Comey to quash an FBI investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn's foreign contacts, Trump grew testy.

"No", Trump told a reporter during a joint press conference with his Colombian counterpart, before trying to shut down the line of inquiry with this: "Next question".

Rosenstein appointed a special counsel to oversee the probe on Wednesday, in an escalation of the investigation that Trump called "the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!"

"The entire thing has been a witch hunt", the President said.

Trump also asserted in the joint press conference that Comey's erroneous Senate testimony earlier this month on the probe into Hillary Clinton's email server-which the Federal Bureau of Investigation corrected in a letter just half an hour before Comey was fired-was the reason "why the deputy attorney general went out and wrote his very, very strong letter".

The ceremony occurred in the Blue Room of the White House, where many senior law enforcement officials - including the Secret Service director - had gathered. "I also got a very, very strong recommendation, as you know, from the deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein".

Those comments appear to contradict information Rosenstein told senators during a briefing on Thursday.

Several members leaving the meeting said the deputy attorney general was aware of Comey's pending termination before he penned the letter to Trump.

"He was informed that the president meant to fire [Comey], and then he wrote the memo", Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., told Roll Call.

But he later used the past tense - though he mixed his tenses: "There was no collusion".

Russian Federation has denied USA intelligence agencies' conclusion that it interfered in the election campaign to try to tilt the vote in Trump's favor.

Trump said that Comey "was very unpopular with most people" and said that he was expecting more widespread praise for the firing.

President Donald Trump said Thursday he thinks the appointment of special counsel for the Russian Federation investigation is bad for the United States.

Trump also asserted Thursday that the FBI's "special reputation" had been damaged with "what happened with respect to the Clinton campaign".

After one answer on the matter, he said it is important that it be put behind the country so Washington can focus on his domestic agenda. "So we want to get back and keep on the track that we're on".

Without directly confirming the details of their conversation, Mr Lavrov said he did not understand what the "secret" was, since the United States introduced a ban on laptops on airlines from some Middle Eastern countries two months ago. Colombia is a key USA ally in the war on drugs.

"I think we have a very divided country because of that and many other things", he said.

Russian Federation has been at the heart of Trump's recent string of controversies, but Putin's government has repeatedly brushed off the suggestion that it has had any role to play in the drama. "They work. Believe me, they work".
