The Two Big Revelations That Came from the Closed-Door Russia Briefing

20 May 2017, 09:48 | Jan Cross

Special counsel pick could boost faith in Justice Dept.

Trump decries Russia probe as 'greatest witch hunt' in US history

Members who attended Friday's briefing said Rosenstein was otherwise "very guarded" and "frustratingly cautious", deferring many answers to being under the purview of the recently appointed special counsel, Robert Mueller."It's clear he just wanted to defer to Mueller on everything tough", said one Democratic lawmaker inside the room. "We want to bring this great country of ours together".

The White House used Rosenstein's three-page memo as rationale to fire Comey.

She praised the appointment of Mueller, calling him "a professional" with "a boatload of integrity".

On Monday, the Washington Post reported that Trump had shared classified intelligence information with the Russians during a meeting in the Oval Office.

He says from the public's standpoint, not much is going to change. "I believe it. I stand by it".

Senators coming out of that meeting told reporters that Rosenstein said Trump made it clear that he planned to fire Comey before Rosenstein wrote a memo outlining issues with the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's flouting Justice Department protocol. He says he should have resigned sooner for the good of the agency, however, he doesn't doubt Comey's thoroughness as an investigator. In an interview two days after the firing, Trump told NBC he had been planning to terminate Comey regardless and was thinking of Russian Federation when he made that decision.

"After my 10th day on my new job in Washington, D.C., a friend sent me a text message that said, 'You need to get out of there!'" Rosenstein said.

The Wednesday decision to name former FBI Director Robert Mueller, an apolitical outsider, to oversee the case seemed meant to restore public faith in an independent Justice Department following a series of headache-inducing headlines. "I hope you can let this go", Trump said, according to multiple Comey associates.

Paul Ryan says he has not lost confidence in Trump
Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn", a White House statement said. Congress members warned the surprising dismissal had marred the independence of the FBI investigation.

Sean Spicer: Comey was putting 'unnecessary pressure' on Trump's relationship to Russian Federation
But the decision surprised many since it was Comey himself leading the investigation of Trump's campaign and Russian Federation . Trump has insisted that he is not in the FBI's crosshairs, claiming last week that the agency's then-director, James B.

Dollar heads for worst week in over a year amid political uncertainty
Benchmark 10-year note yields were unchanged on the day at 2.23 percent, after earlier rising as high as 2.26 percent. USA crude rose 2.15 percent to $50.41 per barrel and Brent was last at $53.71, up 2.29 percent on the day.

Trump referred to Comey's testimony at a recent Capitol Hill hearing after which the Justice Department ended up having to amend part of his testimony regarding last year's probe of Hillary Clinton's email practices.

Illinois Democrat Dick Durbin echoed McCaskill, saying Rosenstein told lawmakers that he knew of Trump's intent the day before he wrote a document that the White House initially said was the main reason Comey was dismissed.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday blasted the probe into whether his team colluded with Russian Federation to tilt the 2016 election in his favor as the "greatest witch hunt" in US history. However the White House said there would be no announcement Friday.

Earlier Thursday on Twitter, Trump complained that he has been singled out for attacks such as no president has endured - a claim mocked by, among others, allies of Bill Clinton who recalled his impeachment trial and the humiliations involving exposure of his affair with a White House intern. Attorney General Jeff Sessions cited this memo in a letter to Trump recommending he fire Comey. The Justice Department on May 17, 2017, appointed Mueller as a special counsel to over.

Trump's own timeline and rationale for firing Comey has repeatedly been amended by his administration.

The meeting, at which all senators were free to ask questions and make statements, had been expected to be contentious as anger flared over Comey's dismissal and Rosenstein's possible role in it.

That revelation came after almost the entire complement of the U.S. Senate attended a briefing with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in a secure auditorium beneath the Capitol.

The Mueller pick was announced Wednesday.
