Syria condemns attack by US-led coalition

19 May 2017, 11:21 | Terri Saunders

A military source on the Syrian government side said the air strike had hit "one of our military points", without elaborating, Syrian state TV reported.

Representatives of Syria's government and opposition High Negotiations Committee are in Switzerland for the sixth round of UN-backed peace negotiations, but there has been little sign of progress.

Syrian has said an aerial "aggression" by the US-led coalition on a government military position near the border with Jordan killed several soldiers and caused material damage.

Moscow is concerned over differences in understanding the need to unite those who indeed fight on the ground and in the air against terrorists of the Islamic State and the former Jabhat al-Nusra, he said.

Russia's deputy foreign minister Gennady Gatilov added to the condemnation, calling the strike "a breach of Syrian sovereignty".

Coalition fighter planes struck the convoy near the southern Syrian town of al-Tanf while it was advancing inside a protected "deconfliction zone" on Thursday - a move that US officials have claimed was a defensive measure to protect their forces at Tanf airbase.

"Literally a day before this (Thursday's strike) a strike was carried out which resulted in a large number of civilian deaths, which is also unacceptable", Gatilov was cited as saying.

"This was despite Russian attempts to dissuade pro-regime movement towards al Tanf, coalition aircraft show of force and warning shots". A road between Iraq and Syria would facilitate the flow of assistance from Iran, which is a strong backer of Assad.

A US Pentagon official stated that the convoy was attacked by an air strike in the southern region of the country near the Jordanian border.

The Syrian military official said on Friday that the area attacked was a military position along the Tanf highway in the desert, close to where the borders of Jordan, Syria and Iraq meet.

The development comes only a few days after United States jets killed almost two dozen civilians in an attack on an area in Syria's eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr near the border with Iraq.

"The Syrian Arab Army is fighting terrorism on its territory, and no party has the right to determine the course of its operations", the source said.

He said: "We are not increasing our role in the Syrian civil war".

The statement added that the US -led coalition forces will continue to defend themselves against IS or any other threat to the coalition or its allies in the area.
