Surfer worked from bedroom to beat cyberattack

A young British computer expert hailed a hero for helping to shut down the crippling cyber attack said he was just "doing my bit" to stop the hackers.

Hutchins credited hundreds of other computer experts who also worked over the weekend with limiting the spread of the online virus, which took out computers and networks across 150 countries, the Daily News reported.

He was reportedly analyzing a sample of the malicious malware's code when he noticed it was linked to an unregistered web. He said: "Please if you want an interview that badly, DM me". The virus had reached several countries and forced several NHS hospitals in the United Kingdom to switch off their systems.

"Marcus, with the program he runs at Kryptos Logic, not only saved the United States but also prevented further damage to the rest of the world", The Associated Press quoted Mr Neino as saying.

According to the blog post, MalwareTech's theory is that the "kill switch" was in there as a signal to the worm that is was running in a sandbox, essentially secure isolation for testing software.

"GPs, of course, can still diagnose and treat patients without using computers but we ask our patients to bear with us if routine services such as repeat prescriptions and appointment booking services are slightly disrupted this week", she said.

"I've seen posts about the awful things people have done to him and for me in future it could be the same things", MalwareTech said.

But Marcus Hutchins doesn't consider himself a hero. It was a very exciting moment.

Mr Hutchins has long tweeted under the handle MalwareTech, which features a profile photo of a cat with huge sunglasses.

But he realizes his newfound fame will mean an end to the anonymity.

"I've still been working across from my company Kryptos Logic, we've been trying to provide the sort of, the IP addresses to NCSC (National Cyber Security Centre), the Federal Bureau of Investigation, so that victims can be notified", he said.

"On Monday morning at the start of the new working week it's likely that successful attacks from Friday that haven't yet become apparent will become apparent", he said. Hutchins lives with his family in this seaside town, where he works out of his bedroom on a sophisticated computer setup with three enormous screens. The concept of celebrity was clearly foreign to him.

Many will be following his next moves though.

CyberSecurity Ventures forecast expenditures on cybersecurity will grow between 12 percent and 15 percent annually for the next five years.

"The unprecedented cybercriminal activity we are witnessing is generating so much cyber spending, it's become almost impossible for analysts to keep track".

Right now though, he's going on holiday to Las Vegas and California.

Yes, surfing. On waves this time.
