The Tories also performed well in the mayoral elections, winning tightly-fought battles for elected mayors in the West Midlands and significantly Tees Valley, where Conservative Ben Houchen became the first elected mayor in Labour's north-eastern heartland, beating Labour's Sue Jeffrey by more than 2,000 votes in the second round of counting.

A total of nearly 5,000 council seats were in play from the local elections previously held in 2013.

These were quite unusual local elections for the Liberal Democrats, as they were competing in county council elections, but not in the more Remain-leaning city seats that make up many of their key election targets in England.

Many of the Tory council gains - which include areas such as Derbyshire, East Sussex, Norfolk, Gloucestershire, Isle of Wight, Lincolnshire, Warwickshire and Monmouthshire - came at the expense of UKIP, whose vote has collapsed.

Labour finance spokesman John McDonnell acknowledged the party had suffered a tough night, but told ITV the results were not "the wipeout that people expected".

London did not vote in this set of local elections, so the results tell us little about how voters in the constituencies most heavily opposed to Brexit will behave in the general election. And Jeremy Corbyn's party was pushed into third place in Scotland, where Tories added at least 110 councillors.

Labour have lost hundreds of council seats, the Liberal Democrats have stayed roughly stable, and UKIP's vote has all but disappeared.

Jeremy Corbyn suffered a major setback in his hopes of mounting a challenge for No 10 as Labour haemorrhaged scores of council seats.

In Dorset, Conservatives retained control although leader Robert Gold lost his seat to the Liberal Democrats.

'We know this is no small task, it is a challenge on an historic scale.

"It's quite clear from results in local elections up and down the country that Theresa May is really connecting with her message, not just with regards to Brexit, but also for helping to support a country that is here to support all of our communities and our residents".

Ukip lost all ten seats on Hampshire County Council.

With full results declared by all 88 councils holding elections in England, Scotland and Wales, the Tories had control of 28 authorities, including 11 gains.

Of the 2,006 adults interviewed by ORB, nearly six in 10, or 59 per cent, said Mr Corbyn should stand down immediately if he loses the general election.

The Conservatives have made gains while nearly all the other parties have lost ground.

May has urged voters to give the Conservatives a bigger majority in Parliament in the June 8 national election in order to strengthen Britain's hand in exit talks with the European Union.

Arron Banks, the donor who bankrolled Ukip's growth in recent years, said the party was "finished as an electoral force" and its leadership needed "a strategic bullet to the back of the head".

The Tories are on course to gain massive ground from the UKIP and Labour.
