President Trump Holds Press Conference With Colombia's President Before Overseas Trip

19 May 2017, 08:31 | Todd Saunders

Mueller on Wednesday evening was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein as special counsel to oversee the Justice Department's investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the USA presidential election and related issues.

While taking questions at a Thursday afternoon joint press conference between President Trump and Colombian President Michael Santos, Trump flat out denied that he requested former FBI Director James Comey to end the ongoing investigation into his former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

In late March, former national security adviser Michael Flynn's lawyer said Flynn would agree to testify before Congress about his controversial connections to Russian Federation only if he were promised immunity from prosecution.

US President Donald Trump has denied all allegations that he tried to pressure fired FBI Director James Comey into dropping a Russia-related probe, and called the appointment of a special counsel to probe claims of his collusion with Russian Federation a "witch hunt". Trump allegedly told him during a White House meeting that "I hope you can let this go", referring to the investigation.

"Were any monumental Republican shift against Trump to transpire, the leading indicator would likely be Trump's approval rating among Republican voters", the article said.

Impeachment: Donald Trump's worst nightmare?
He was impeached in 1868 after being accused of violating the Tenure of Office Act by not receiving the approval of the U.S. Secondly, Democrats wouldn't be able to impeach Trump in the near future anyway - at least not by themselves.

"I don't think I'm in a position to give any advice to President Trump. It's special", Trump said, adding that the bureau will soon have a director "who's going to be outstanding". However, shortly before the news conference began, Rosenstein informed the Senate that he knew Comey would be fired even before he had penned his recommendation.

Sanford said the media-driven narrative about Trump's alleged misdeeds "would be more than deeply troubling" if true. "And then on top of that, after the Wednesday performance by Director Comey, you had a person come and have to readjust the record, which many people have never seen before, because there were misstatements made".

The Justice Department says Mueller, the new special counsel, has been given sweeping power to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign, including potential links between Moscow and Trump associates.

He said Comey turned in a "poor performance" in his most recent testimony to Congress and that Rosenstein had written a "very strong letter" outlining Comey's shortcomings.

"So I want to go slowly about the way we talk about this, but fundamentally, I do think all of Director Comey's notes, and I think all - any and all - tapes that exist in the White House ought to be turned over", Sasse said.
