New York Times Square attack: Harrowing moment vehicle ploughs into crowd

One person was killed and at least 22 were injured on Thursday when a auto careened through Times Square and plowed through a crowd of pedestrians in one of New York City's most congested corridors, officials said.

Rojas' motivation was unclear, but Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio said there was "no indication that this was an act of terrorism".

Commissioner Daniel Nigro of the New York Fire Department said all of the injured were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

The deceased was identified as an 18-year-old from MI.

Vanguard gathered that the incident was not an act of terrorism from police source and witnesses.

NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said the suspect was 26-year-old Richard Rojas, a resident of the Bronx.

In one of his two previous DWI arrests, the suspect was driving faster than 99 miles per hour in a 50 miles per hour zone, sources familiar with his record say.

Witnesses said the motorist was driving against traffic before his burgundy Honda sedan mounted the sidewalk and struck pedestrians on Thursday (Friday NZ Time).

Pandemonium erupted when the vehicle barreled through the prime tourist location and slammed into a security barrier, coming to rest with two of its wheels in the air.

Times Square, full of restaurants, shops and entertainment, is a popular tourist destination in New York City, attracting hundreds of thousands of pedestrians on a daily basis.

"Don't make him out to be a terrorist or something", Ramos said.

Thursday's incident revived memories of July previous year when a man driving a truck killed at least 84 people, 10 of them children, and injured 202 in the French city of Nice. Law enforcement sources Rojas appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he was taken into custody.

Bicycle courier Julio Sanchez Rivera, 20, told USA TODAY he was making his first delivery of the day when he heard a auto engine revving. Lowe saw injured people, including a woman who "had tracks all over her body".

He was arrested a year later at a naval base in Jacksonville, Florida, where officials said he attacked a cab driver, shouted "my life is over", and threatened to kill police, according to court records. Three other people suffered injuries considered serious, and 15 others "less serious" injuries, he said. President Donald Trump, whose home at Trump Tower is one mile from the crash scene, was made aware of the incident nearly immediately and given updates, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer tweeted.

"Times Square, we got a auto running people over on 42-7, going northbound on 7th ave, running people over", one NYPD dispatcher said, according to audio clips from Broadcastify.

Television images taken at the scene showed people being taken away on stretchers. But he added: "It's a tough day for New York City".

Initial reports of the incident brought to mind vehicle attacks on pedestrians in recent months in Britain, France, Germany, Israel and Sweden.

"I was in shock, I was screaming", she said.
