Lawmakers Issue Requests For Comey's Memo Regarding Flynn Investigation
20 May 2017, 01:13 | Gladys Abbott
A memo detailing President Donald Trump's request to shut down an FBI investigation of his ousted national security adviser is a powerful piece of evidence that could be used to build an obstruction of justice case against him. "But the comment or conduct itself has brought disgrace upon the White House, and therefore we think [the president] should be impeached for that'". It has led some members of Congress to begin talking about impeachment, while others are seriously discussing the possibility that the president may have committed obstruction of justice. White House officials, primarily chief of staff H.R. Haldeman, domestic policy aide John Ehrlichman and counsel John Dean, wanted to limit the exposure of the White House to the burglary. U.S. press were barred but not their Russian counterparts, it transpired.
Putin told a news conference that he would be willing to turn over notes of Trump's meeting with the Russian diplomats if the White House agreed.
But the swirling questions about his conduct were clearly on his mind when he told graduates at the US Coast Guard Academy in CT that "no politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly". White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has refused to say whether such recordings exist.
Both congressmen have criticised Mr Trump and did not vote for him in 2016 presidential election.
Comey's memo, an apparent effort to create a paper trail of his contacts with the White House, would be the clearest evidence to date that the president has tried to influence the investigation.
The memo was kept secret by Comey and only shared with a handful of people close to the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

The winter storm warning is in effect until 3 p.m. on Friday for Denver and the urban corridor and 6 p.m. for the high country. The highest reported snow total was 38.5 inches (97.79 centimetres) near Ward, Colorado, the National Weather Service said.
Tottenham's Kane tops Premier League scoring charts
Kane averages a goal every 94 minutes in the league this season, and unsurprisingly described the campaign as his best yet. Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said he has no concerns about holding on to Kane during the summer transfer window.
He said he would release a record of the meeting to the US Congress if they requested it. Will they answer questions about Mr. Trump's now-notorious meeting with the Russian foreign minister where sensitive foreign intelligence was reportedly revealed, not to mention any private meetings with Mr. Comey?
Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader of the Senate, said simply, "It would be helpful to have less drama emanating from the White House".
The Times'report has prompted the strongest calls yet for Trump to be held accountable for his actions, with several analysts and officials pondering the possibility of impeachment. He did the same after a series of conversations with Dean later that month in which the White House counsel asked Walters if the Central Intelligence Agency could pay for the bail or the salaries of the Watergate burglars.
Eggleston noted that because everything the White House does can get politicized, his job was to police what Obama could or couldn't say with respect to any law enforcement investigation - including cases investigated by state authorities involving black men fatally shot by police.
Flynn was forced out in February after he misled the vice president about his conversations with Russia's ambassador before Trump took office. But the White House has provided differing accounts of the firing. It is the kind of conversation that seems completely in character for Trump, who, over the course of the campaign and now in office, has betrayed no - zero - understanding of the necessary separation of the president and his Justice Department when it comes to making independent judgments about political matters and political opponents.
Mark Warner of Virginia, top Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee, said he would ask Comey for additional material as part of that panel's investigation.

The U.S. declined to say whether the security agents were granted diplomatic immunity or under what conditions they were released. They said they expected "conduct more appropriate" from Turkey, a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and a key US ally.
