A large number of pilgrims throng Uttarakhand in summer for the Chardham Yatra - a holy tour of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri and Gangotri. Meanwhile, tourists going towards the shrine have been stopped at Joshimath, Pipalkoti and Chamoli.

Officials said an estimated 11,000 people are stranded on both sides of the landslide spot.
