Polls put Labour a long way behind May's Conservatives as the campaign begins, and the opposition party has been accused of offering a muddled position on Brexit.

Britain's opposition Labour Party will immediately guarantee the rights of European Union citizens living in the country if it wins a June election, it said on Tuesday, setting out a Brexit strategy aimed at eating into Prime Minister Theresa May's runaway lead.

She said: "We won't be doing television debates. We do not accept that there has to be a reckless Conservative Brexit".

Labour has pledged to retain the triple lock, although the policy has been criticised by MPs as being financially "unsustainable" and an independent review past year said it should be reconsidered.

Starmer said that a Labour government would rewrite May's Brexit negotiating strategy and would focus instead on a deal that retained as numerous benefits as possible of the single market and customs union.

"If we are and we're going for a free trade agreement, rather than membership of the single market, that's a massive for the prosperity of the British economy".

"The EU has had a huge impact in securing workplace protections and environmental safeguards".

"We just can't believe Labour has been dumb enough to re-select someone who makes Nigel Farage look like a cuddly pro-European", a Lib Dem source told the Evening Standard.

Sir Keir said there would need to be an end-date for such renegotiations, and Britain would switch to emergency transitional arrangements once it exited the European Union in order to avoid an economic "cliff edge" if no deal was in place.

The Conservatives, who have previously labelled Corbyn as a "threat to national security", pounced upon his comments and have emphasised the "strong leadership" of May.

"We are confident that we can win this election once Labour's message is clearly heard".

Jeremy Corbyn has said he will not take part in any general election TV debates without Theresa May - effectively ensuring the events won't go ahead.

Responding to Sir Keir's speech, Brexit Secretary David Davis said: "Jeremy Corbyn is too weak and floundering to get a good deal in the Brexit negotiations".

British lawmakers on Wednesday (19 April) overwhelmingly backed Prime Minister Theresa May's call for a snap election, paving the way for a June vote she hopes will give her a "mandate to complete Brexit". It is an opportunity to provide this United Kingdom with the strong and stable leadership it needs to see us through Brexit and beyond.

Answering questions during a campaign visit to Bridgend in South Wales, Theresa May dismissed Labour's Brexit proposals as "nonsensical".

Running well behind, his Labour Party went on the offensive on Tuesday, berating May for a "reckless" approach to the Brexit talks that will start in earnest in June.

"This election is a chance to change the direction of the country and prevent a hard Brexit", said a spokesman for the party.

He was speaking after it was announced that British people who have lived overseas for over 15 years will not be allowed a vote.
