Jharkhand: Tribals lynch seven in a day over child abduction rumours

The incident took place when a group of four cattle traders were on their way to Rajnagar in Seraikela-Kharsawan district to buy cattle. They also set their vehicle on fire.

The seven people lynched on Thursday included four Muslims and three Hindus from neighbouring non-tribal villages and urban areas.

Suspecting them to be child kidnappers, the villagers attacked them and also vandalised their vehicle.

Angry villagers pelted stones, clashed with police and also torched two police vehicles.

Last week, three persons were lynched in the same district for being suspected child lifters.

Two of the victims were identified as Uttam Kumar Verma, a resident of Jugsalai, and Ganesh Kumar Gupta of Bagbera, the SP (City) said adding, the identity of another victim could not be established.

Allegations of child kidnapping were circling through five or six villages in the region, said the police.

Some of the villagers were identified and action would be taken after investigation, Kumar said adding senior officers have gone to the spot with reinforcement.

Police said no fewer than six men were beaten to death by mob in eastern India on suspicion that they had kidnapped children, a media report said on Friday.

The police say rumours had been swirling in the region, as well as the neighbouring Saraikela district, where three cattle traders, Nayeem, Seraj Khan and Sajju, were thrashed to death by a mob.
