Google I/O 2017 Revealed Android O Beta with New Features

20 May 2017, 12:46 | Patty Hardy

Since yesterday was the Keynote speech and most of the bigger announcements happened on the first day, today has seen less announcements in general and ones that weren't as monumental for the world of Google and Android.

In a way, the Android Go is more of a product for the phone makers.

It's an app that uses image recognition to identify objects appearing in your camera lens in real-time.

While at Google I/O 2017 in May, Google said it would roll out calling to all Google Home owners "over the coming months".

Earlier this year in January, in an APK teardown, a feature was spotted which would allow users to type into their smartphone in order to give instructions to the Google Assistant rather than speak to it.

There are many reasons why you should start using this Google Assistant instead of using the Siri app. Google's new Assistant offers machine learning capabilities which is more smarter than the current Siri app which doesn't offer this feature.

Android Go is not the successor to Google's Android One initiative that got born in 2014, but Google has certainly taken several notes from it. But for Google, it's far more important that people are using its apps and services wherever they are - Android, iOS, the desktop, or sitting in their living room. There is no concrete evidence at this point to confirm this, and Google might have implemented the feature into this developer preview exclusively for testing purposes.

Android is also popping up in more places beyond the phone. A new Android-based, in-car control system highlighted the Assistant, but doesn't require a phone. Building data-hungry features like Lens directly into the operating system would complicate that goal.

Battery life is something Google hopes to tackle with Android O, and it plans to do so through a new battery settings menu and battery usage portrayed in a simpler and more understandable manner. Android Go will primarily focus on optimizing the Android ecosystem for devices that is loaded with 1 GB or lesser memory. Interestingly, these companies were also its partners for Android One project.

The low cost platform and the apps it will come with will be stripped of their heavier components. Apple largely had the same approach with iOS 10 previous year - the only difference is that Apple's apps are intrinsic to its operating system. Everyone that has compatible devices with Android O public beta can try it out to see its new features ahead of its official release later this summer.
