French president meeting EU chief, to reveal minister picks

New French President Emmanuel Macron waves to supporters after a ceremony at the Arc of Triomphe following his formal inauguration ceremony as French President Sunday

So far his appointments to his presidential team have all gone to men under 50, majority graduates like him of France's elite ENA college for senior public servants - which has turned out generations of French politicians.

Bruno Le Maire, named French economy minister on Wednesday, is a reform-minded conservative whose expertise on Europe and staunch defence of the Franco-German relationship will prove valuable as new President Emmanuel Macron pushes for closer European Union integration.

Just back from meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, Macron is huddling with Philippe throughout the day with the list of ministers is due to be released at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Paris. Her father survived the Holocaust.

Viard pointed out that the French society should be inspired by having a young centrist president and a prime minister not well-known in the political circles, adding that people would have a sentiment that Macron was "opening doors and windows closed before".

In an important gesture to the right-wing Republicans party ahead of parliamentary elections next month, the crucial Economy Ministry will be run by prominent conservative Bruno Le Maire, 48. Pro-Israel activists in France regard him as a staunch ally and defender of the Jewish state, according to the right-leaning news site Alyaexpress.

Mr Macron's cabinet is expected to span the left, right and centre. Goulard follows Michèle Alliot-Marie, who served as defense minister from 2002 to 2007.

Shortly after Mr Philippe's appointment, Mr Macron travelled to Berlin on his first foreign trip as French leader. They range from quirky to obscure to old-school: math genius Cedric Villani; former train and subway boss Anne-Marie Idrac; Axelle Tessandier, who created a startup in San Francisco before joining Macron's campaign; and a string of former ministers in Socialist and conservative governments.

Macron's staff had initially said the government would be named late Tuesday but the presidential palace now says in a statement the announcement will come Wednesday afternoon.

Jean-Yves Le Drian, in charge of defence under President François Hollande, will become foreign minister, while Nicolas Hulot, an environmentalist, becomes ecology minister.

His choice of Philippe, 46, for prime minister was seen as a strategic pick by the 39-year-old president, who is trying to woo modernisers of all stripes to his side.
