Fox News fires Bob Beckel for'insensitive remark to black employee

Fox News Channel says it has fired Beckel for making an insensitive remark to a black employee.

Bob Beckel has been dismissed from Fox News after allegations he made a racist comment - the latest in a series of damaging controversies that have caused continued unrest at the right-wing network.

It wasn't immediately clear who would replace Beckel on "The Five" and Fox News did not provide details on the incident that led to his firing.

Beckel, a former Democratic political strategist, had returned to the network in January after a stint as a commentator on CNN.

The employee who made the complaint was a technician assigned to do work on Beckel's computer, the worker's lawyers, Douglas Wigdor and Jeanne Christensen, said in a statement.

The off-air exchange happened Tuesday night and was brought to the attention of Fox News' human resources department, according to The Los Angeles Times and An investigation was conducted and Beckel was informed of his termination on Friday.

"No one tried to persuade Mr. Wigdor's client to withdraw his complaint", the Fox News spokesperson said. Current and former Fox News employees have filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the network in New York's supreme court, while notable Fox News personality Bill O'Reilly was ousted last month after numerous reports surfaced about his inappropriate behavior toward female co-workers. He had previously hosted "The Five" from 2011 to 2015.

Rupert Murdoch, executive chairman of Fox News, unexpectedly announced Beckel's return to Fox News earlier this year, saying he was "missed by many fans of 'The Five'".
