Democrats Slam Trump's Criticism of Stepped-up Russia Probe

Iran's presidential election is effectively a choice between moderate incumbent Rouhani and hardline jurist Ebrahim Raisi

President Trump believes that the appointment of a special counsel "hurts our country terribly", he said Thursday, a day after a special counsel was appointed to oversee the FBI investigation into Russian efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election, including any ties between Russia and Mr. Trump's campaign.

However, fellow Republicans expressed hopes the move would restore some calm to a capital plunged into chaos.

Mueller was named as special counsel on Wednesday, one day after a report surfaced that Trump had requested ex-FBI Director James Comey end any investigations involving National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's contacts with Russian Federation.

"I do think that the special prosecutor provides a sense of calm and confidence perhaps for the American people, which is incredibly important".

The revelation further confuses the murky timeline laid out by the White House following Mr Comey's surprising dismissal.

Trump says, "we want to bring this country of ours together".

Durbin says Rosenstein told senators at a closed briefing Thursday that he "learned of the president's decision to fire him (Comey) and then he wrote his memo with his rationale".

In a widely-shared tweet-thread, the Harvard-educated attorney described Rosenstein's place in the Department of Justice and speculated about Rosenstein's actions in the run-up and aftermath of Comey's firing by President Trump.

Faso declined, however, to comment on President Donald Trump saying he's the victim of a "witch hunt" or about calls by some Democrats in Congress for Trump to be impeached.

He also accused Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Obama administration of conducting "illegal acts" with no special counsel appointed for them. She addressed reporters after a closed-door meeting where Rosenstein briefed senators.

"This was a very good first step. Mr Rosenstein has done the right thing", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on the Senate floor. And House and Senate investigators had invited Comey back to Congress to explain what happened - although Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz declared on Twitter that he had trouble finding Comey to invite him to testify to the oversight committee he chairs.
