Death toll due to Cholera rises to 242 in Yemen

19 May 2017, 10:15 | Todd Saunders

"The total number of reported cases in three weeks in Yemen is 23,425 cases and 242 deaths", WHO Yemen representative, Nevio Zagaria, told reporters in UN Office at Geneva by phone, according to Anadolu Agency.

"The speed of the resurgence of this cholera epidemic is unprecedented", World Health Organization country representative for Yemen Nevio Zagaria said on Friday.

The UN health agency said that in the past day alone, 20 cholera deaths and 3,460 suspected cases had been registered in the country, where two-thirds of the population are on the brink of starvation.

More than 10,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in more than two years of war, which has also destroyed much of the country's infrastructure.

The lack of local health centres - and the fact that staff haven't been paid in seven months - have left Yemenis with no option but to seek help from hospitals, which WHO says are now "overwhelmed".

Cholera is a bacterial infection contracted through ingesting contaminated food or water.

At the same time, he said, lacking electricity meant water pumping stations were only functioning in an intermittent way, and the sewer systems were damaged.

Earlier this week, the Houthi-run health ministry in the rebel-held capital Sanaa declared a state of emergency, saying the situation had worsened and that it was "unable to contain this disaster".

UNICEF's Yemen mission said that there had been an "alarming increase" in cholera-related deaths.

Zagaria said the United Nations agencies were preparing to "release an emergency response cholera plan in the next 48 hours", aimed at dramatically scaling up the number of treatment centres and rehydration centres.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease that is transmitted through contaminated drinking water.

Since March 2015, the Saudi regime has been engaged in a brutal campaign against Yemen in an attempt to reinstall Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, the president who resigned and is a staunch ally of Riyadh. The Saudi regime has failed to achieve its objectives.

According to World Health Organization, more than 240 people have died from cholera in just the last three weeks, out of a total of 23,400 infections.
