Centre Wants Peaceful Life in Kashmir: Jaitley

Jaitley backs Army officer who used a man as shield in Kashmir

Jaitley leaves door ajar for talks with Hurriyat

Parts of the 740-km long LoC witnessed escalation in tensions following the beheading of two Indian soldiers allegedly by Pakistan army's Border Action Team (BAT) on May 1 and subsequent skirmishes in which several civilians were killed and have forced the border dwellers to desert their shell-hit hamlets, mainly in Rajouri district.

He also asserted that there will be no differentiation between local and foreign militants and anybody indulging in violence will be dealt with accordingly.

Responding to the issue, Jaitley said, "Yes, there is some problem in south Kashmir and in certain areas, but Srinagar particularly has been extremely hospitable and absolutely peaceful".

Jaitley was on a visit of the LoC in Rampur sector of Baramulla district. I would complement the Army for the level of their preparedness and enthusiasm.

"Our soldiers are fully confident that they will not allow any form of infiltration to take place".

"We will go hard on militants, particularly the ones, who have crossed over from other side, because they are responsible for creating this situation in the state", he added.

After the meeting, the Defence Minister Jaitley said he was satisfied with the readiness of the Indian security forces to deal with any misadventure by the enemy. "So who have taken to violence of this magnitude will certainly be held accountable for their actions", he said.

"Terrorism and militancy are both aimed against the Indian state, its sovereignty and also against the people of Jammu and Kashmir", he said.

He said the aspirations of the people have to be addressed but that can be done only when there is peace in the state. You can't have the energy of the state involved in just combating violence at various places.

". resources meant for economic development are being used for (ensuring) security", Jaitley said. "We want you to have a peaceful and prosperous life".

Priority at the moment, he said, is to restore normalcy.

"There is a section which will have to be dealt with by security measures and there is a section which will have to be dealt by with citizen-friendly measures", he said. "And that is what we are trying to do".
