AT&T workers go on three-day strike

20 May 2017, 12:04 | Todd Saunders

Members of the Communications Workers of America issued a deadline of 3 p.m. ET tomorrow for AT&T to present what they deem "serious proposals" to avoid a walkout over the weekend.

"At the end of the day, this is about good jobs", said Robert Master, a union official. "We are not engaged in a productive exchange here".

In March, about 17,000 AT&T wireline workers in California and Nevada went on strike. The contracts at stake account for only 13% of the company's employees, he added.

"We will continue working hard to serve our customers", said AT&T spokesman Marty Richter, who declined to estimate potential store closures but said the company will "be open for business".

"We're continuing to bargain, and it's baffling that union leadership would consider calling a strike when we're offering terms in which their members - some of whom average from $115,000 to $148,000 in total compensation - will be better off financially", a spokesperson told The Register.

The union represents 40,000 AT&T Mobility workers.

AT&T Mobility is one of the single largest retail workforces with union representation anywhere in the U.S. numerous 100,000 members are recently organized after CWA scored victories under "bargaining to organize" agreements with the company, which allowed for speedy representation elections.

This is a strike happening with over 40,000 AT&T employees across the country. CWA members also want a reversal of the company's recently changed bonus and incentive pay policy for commissions, which resulted in many employees losing thousands of dollars in take-home pay each year.

The three-day strike will last through the weekend, according to the workers' union, the Communications Workers of America. The two groups' contract negotiations are separate from those of the wireless workers.

As at most telecommunications companies, AT&T's wireless business is growing faster and is more profitable than its wireline side. It is awaiting Justice Department approval for its proposed acquisition of Time Warner. AT&T (t) says it has offered "generous" wage and pension benefit increases and healthcare benefits similar to what other unionized employees have accepted around the country.
