After the chase, which ended at George Hellwig Memorial Park along Bristow Road, there was some kind of altercation between the driver and numerous police officers. Manassas officers found a vehicle they believed was involved in the initial call and tried to pull the driver over at a traffic stop.
Manassas City police were investigating a report of shots fired within city limits when they saw an SUV that may have been involved.
A man was shot and wounded by officers in northern Virginia after police say he called 911 to report a shooting that didn't happen, described the SUV he was driving, then struck pursuing cruisers.
"The driver eventually stopped the vehicle in a parking lot within the park and exited", Perok said.
Officers performed life-saving efforts until rescuers arrived.
The man was armed with a weapon, and two police cruisers were damaged in the incident, officials said. Police said the driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
A replica BB-gun was found at the scene, Perok said. A juvenile who was inside the SUV was not injured.
Due to the location of the chase and the shooting, Prince William County police will handle the criminal elements of the investigation, while Manassas City police will investigate the administrative aspects.
Prince William County Police were not involved in the initial pursuit or the shooting, officials say. Officers determined a shooting didn't occur in the city.
