What to know about Air Defense Identification Zones

Russian bombers spotted off Alaska coast for 2nd time this week

According to a USA official, a pair of Russian bombers flew close to Alaska, they came within 35 nautical miles of the coastline.

Two Russian TU-95 Bear bombers were spotted flying about 41 miles off the coast of Alaska on Tuesday, just hours after two US F-22 fighter jets intercepted the same type of Russian aircraft in the area.

There was no bridge to bridge communication between the US and Russian aircraft on Monday, but several USA military officials told NBC News that the Russians acted "very professionally".

On Tuesday, the two Russian TU-95 Bear bombers once again flew into the Alaskan Air Defense and Identification Zone, according to two U.S. defense officials.

The U.S. jets flew beside the Russian bombers for 12 minutes before the bombers turned around and headed back to their base in eastern Russia, Fox News reported.

Two Russian TU-95 bombers came within 100 miles south of Kodiak Island last Monday.

During the Monday incident, Russia's "nuclear-capable" bombers got almost within 100 miles of Kodiak Island near the Alaskan coast in the first time the country has buzzed the US since President Donald Trump took office in January.

USA military officials downplayed Monday's midair interaction as "nothing out of the ordinary" and "not dissimilar from what we've seen in the past with respect to Russian long-range aviation".

The Air Force describes the AWACS aircraft as a modified Boeing 707/320 commercial plane that has a rotating radar dome attached to the top.

"We go up and visually identify them and fly along side of them", she said. "It can also provide information for commanders of air operations to gain and maintain control of the air battle".
