UP govt asks for fresh technical evaluation to set up Jewar airport

NCR gets its second airport UP govt seeks fresh tech evaluation for Jewar airport

Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government is pushing for a new airport in Jewar as the government feels that Delhi will require a second airport in next eight years.

A second worldwide airport for Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) could become a reality soon with the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh asking the Centre for a fresh feasibility report on a new airport at Jewar near Noida.

The new Jewar airport at Greater Noida will act as a secondary airport for the National Capital Region, which is now served by the Indira Gandhi International Airport at Palam in southwest Delhi.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha said there is a balance between airside capacity and terminal side capacity.

Sinha said there would be a need for a second airport in Delhi earlier than previously thought.

The minister pointed out that capacity is being planned to be increased from the current 67 to 95 movements per hour at peak time in the next three years.

By the end of 2017, the airside capacity is expected to rise by 10% to 72-73 aircraft movements per hour. The committee would meet every month and guide and facilitate close cooperation in this regard among the various stakeholders.

The UPA government at the Centre then formed a group of ministers to decide on the project as it violated a policy to build another airport within 150 km of the existing one in Delhi.

The plan for the "Noida International Airport" at Jewar was revived after BJP MP from Gautam Budh Nagar Mahesh Sharma, also former Minister of State for Civil Aviation, pressed for building an international airport in his constituency.
