UK lawmakers back Theresa May's call for June 8 election

20 April 2017, 08:56 | Todd Saunders

"The Prime Minister says we have a stronger economy, yet she can't explain why people's wages are lower today than they were 10 years ago or why more households are in debt, six million people earning less than the minimum wage, child poverty is up, pensioner poverty is up".

If her Conservative Party wins a majority, as surveys expect it to, May would not be required to call another general election until 2022.

Her predecessor David Cameron agreed to be questioned in front of a BBC Question Time-style audience for live television programmes during the 2015 general election.

If the election goes ahead, parliament would be dissolved on May 3 and the campaign would begin in earnest, just days after European Union leaders hold a special summit to agree a negotiating strategy for Brexit on April 29.

The Conservatives would need a swing of 5.1 per cent, but Labour has held the seat at every General Election since 1997.

"I believe in campaigns where politicians actually get out and about and meet the voters", she said.

"The forthcoming election will be an opportunity for unionists to unite around a strong Democratic Unionist Party that will advocate for them in Parliament".

He said Mrs May's U-turn on her previous insistence that she would not call a snap election showed she could not be trusted.

Hours after May announced on Tuesday that she would be seeking to hold an early general election on 8 June, Downing Street confirmed that she would not go up against other leaders on TV on the run-up to the election.

"There isn't time to organise a formal progressive alliance", she said.

The Southeast Division champion Wizards also have the revenge card after losing the series 4-2 to the top-seeded Hawks in 2015. Brooks was an assistant coach with the Seattle SuperSonics during Durant's rookie season in Seattle during the 2007-08 season.

UK PM May Calls For Early Elections
Despite Corbyn's bravado, his party is demoralized and divided under his left-wing leadership and is expected to fare badly. TV debates don't have a long history in British politics, but were a feature of the last two elections, in 2010 and 2015.

Oklahoma City Thunder: What to watch for in Game 1
Most expect either Harden or Westbrook to take home the MVP trophy on June 26 after both players had stellar regular seasons. If Nene, Clint Capela, and (maybe) Montrezl Harrell can not contain the OKC bigs, that's a huge advantage for the Thunder.

May must first win the support of two-thirds of the parliament in a vote on Wednesday, which looked certain after Labour and the Liberal Democrats said they would vote in favour.

Britain will also not have a say in the future location of London-based European Union agencies, he added, contradicting one United Kingdom official who said this week that the issue would be part of the Brexit negotiations. The election would enable the parties to "make our respective cases to the country and then to respect the result and the mandate it provides to give Britain the strongest possible hand in the negotiations to come".

Britain's prime minister has defended her decision to seek a snap election. The Lib Dems now have just nine seats in Parliament.

May said it was "only recently and reluctantly" that she had made a decision to call for a snap election, rather than serve a fixed term until 2020 under what is a slim Tory majority.

"Now we will be much freer", she told The Sun.

The prime minister's own personal ratings also dwarf those of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, with 50 per cent of those asked saying she would make the best prime minister.

Elections are now set for 2020, just a year after the scheduled completion of Brexit talks.

The Liberal Democrats attacked the Prime Minister's decision to rule out taking part in televised debates ahead of the election.

"May's move isn't risk free", Silver wrote shortly after British Prime Minister Theresa May's Tuesday announcement.
