Stockholm attack: Rakhmat Akilov has confessed, says lawyer

21 April 2017, 03:18 | Terri Saunders

According to the lawyer of the suspect in Sweden's truck attack, the man admitted to a terrorist crime. "His position is that he admits to a terrorist crime and accepts therefore that he will be detained", said lawyer Johan Eriksson, adding that the judge has asked not to divulge details.

Akilov was arrested from a northern suburb of Stockholm hours after the attack. Handcuffed and wearing a thick green hoodie over his head, he kept his head bowed down. He did not address the court directly.

After about an hour, journalists were readmitted into the courtroom and the judge remanded Akilov in custody.

Akilov had asked that a Sunni Muslim lawyer be appointed for him, instead of Eriksson, arguing that "only a lawyer of this faith could assert his interests in the best way", but that request was denied. The attack resulted in two Swedes, a British man and a Belgian woman being killed and left fifteen injured. Nine of the wounded are still in hospital, two are in critical condition. TheSwedish police said Akilov was known to the security services.

In Sweden, a suspect can only be detained for four days, unless a Court extends the pre-trial detention period.

Akilov's attack with a truck ramming through the crowd has not been claimed by IS, like Nice, Berlin, and London.

That said, there were in fact fewer players at yesterday's ceremony than at the one held two years ago. New England has now visited the White House five times after winning the Lombardy Trophy.

Court documents identified Akilov as a citizen of Uzbekistan.

Police have previously said they are sure the suspect is the driver of the truck, citing technical evidence and video camera surveillance images.

"We will continue to investigate if Akilov had other people around him" who may have been accomplices, Ihrman said.

Police have said it could take up to a year to complete the initial investigation into the attack.

Authorities say Akilov has expressed sympathies with extremist organisations.

Sweden observed a minute of silence Monday on a national day of mourning for the victims, with Swedish royalty, foreign diplomats and politicians among the crowds gathering for a noon observance outside Stockholm City Hall, where Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said "the whole of Sweden" sympathized with the families and friends of the victims. His application was rejected a year ago.
