Redknapp named new Birmingham City manager

20 April 2017, 07:38 | Todd Saunders

Birmingham City have appointed Harry Redknapp as their new manager, less than 24 hours after the resignation of former Italy forward Gianfranco Zola.

Gianfranco Zola resigned yesterday at the Championship club after overseeing a bad run of form that yielded only two wins in 22 games since taking over four months ago.

Zola took over the club, from Gary Rowett, when they were seventh in the Championship.

The 70-year-old former Tottenham boss takes charge with Birmingham three points above the relegation zone after a dismal four month spell under Zola. I got home and my wife said: "Are you mad?".

Redknapp was quick to warn Birmingham fans that he is not the football wizard they need to magic their troubles away. He said: "I drove to London, had a meeting for 15 minutes and said 'Sure I will come and do it -no problem". If I feel I can not help the players.

"If I can keep them up, next year would be something I'd really fancy", he added.

There is every chance they might not get another point this season and interesting to see what patter Redknapp comes out with, all the time grateful that he isn't at your club.

"They have won 2 games out of 22".

"I know people criticise the owners but having met the people, they have got big plans and next year will be a big year for the club, we just have to stay in the division this year".

"We have had a good run, losing only three games in our last 12 games, which is good going when you are in the bottom six".

His first game in charge of the central English club will be at local rival Aston Villa on Sunday. A guy came and did a bit of work at my house and started telling me how he coaches his little boys' team and would I come over? "If we hadn't made the play-offs, I wouldn't have got paid anything".
