Paris shooting kills 1 officer, wounds another, likely terror attack say police

Paris police say officer and attacker shot killed

The gunman wounded two police officers before being shot dead by security forces on the Champs Elysees.

The Frenchman was convicted in 2003 of attempted murder in the shooting of two police officers.

"The Prime Minister has tonight passed on her condolences to President Hollande".

President Francois Hollande said in an address that the attack as "terrorist in nature".

Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet told BFM television that the terrorist stepped from a auto near the Franklin Roosevelt subway station and opened fire on a police vehicle.

The attack started around 9 p.m. local time in Paris, when a vehicle stopped next to a police vehicle stationed on the side of the road.

According to BFMTV news channel the killer had talked of wanting to kill police officers on the Telegram messaging service. Authorities said a man jumped out of auto and shot at a traffic police vehicle.

The French prosecutors' office said the counter-terrorism office had opened an inquiry.

The attacker had been flagged as an extremist, according to two police officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to publicly discuss the investigation.

As you know, France has been under a state of emergency since 2015 November where there was a major terrorist attack.

Cazeneuve compared the attack to recent incidents in Berlin, Stockholm and London, adding that the whole of Europe was facing a unique terrorist threat.

This weekend France heads into the first round of a closely contested four-person presidential race that could see the country elect populist far-right National Front candidate Marine Le Pen, who's now trailing the moderate, EU-favored Emmanuel Macron.
