N Korea poses 'most dangerous' threat to Asia-Pacific - Pence

21 April 2017, 02:59 | Terri Saunders

"President Trump has made it clear that the United States will pursue an "America First" policy in trade and exchange".

KORUS, which was signed five years ago, provides duty-free access for 95 percent of consumer and industrial goods.

The vice president added: "Indonesia's tradition of moderate Islam frankly is an inspiration to the world and we commend you and your people". Trump has also criticized devaluation of the yen, but when the yen has been strong in the past, sales of USA vehicles have still been sluggish. "Our businesses continue to face too many barriers to entry, which tilts the playing field against American workers and American growth", he told local business leaders.

Pence, himself, indicated that the administration is looking for a non-military way out of the crisis.

Japan is the second stop on a four-country trip that is taking Pence to South Korea, Indonesia and Australia.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Pence also emphasized that the USA would uphold freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea - where China's actions in support of its disputed territorial claims have sparked tensions in recent years.

"That kind of economic and diplomatic pressure will result we hope in the regime in Pyongyang forfeiting their ambitions, forfeiting their nuclear weapons program and joining the family of nations", he told CNN.

From two continents, Pence and Defense Secretary James N. Mattis warned that North Korea's latest failed missile launch was a reckless act of provocation and assured allies in Asia that the US was ready to work to achieve a peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The current and former US officials spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the Russian documents' classified status. The officials said the hacking was a covert intelligence operation run separately out of the Kremlin.

He said that while "all options are on the table", Trump was determined to work with Japan, South Korea and other allies in Asia to resolve the problem.

But in an interview with me on Wednesday afternoon, he adopted a harder line: The Trump administration, he said, demands that North Korea abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile programs without any promise of direct negotiations with the United States.

"Japan, though, is unwilling to give up on the TPP, and it's organizing other member nations to move ahead without the U.S".

Pence had met earlier with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and affirmed the United States, like Japan, seeks to achieve peace but that peace is possible through force and strength, the Japanese news agency reported.

Pence spoke of the U.S. commitment to article 5 of the U.S. -Japan Security Treaty, mentioning specifically U.S. defense of Japan's claim to the Senkaku Islands. The discussions are to focus on economic and structural policy and trade and investment strategies aimed at strengthening both countries' economies.

Pence delivered President Trump's strong resolve to closely cooperate with South Korea, Japan and China to seek a peaceful solution to the North's nuclear issue. The country's United Nations envoy, Kim In Ryong, said this week that the US had pushed the Korean Peninsula to the "brink of war". The sector is lobbying the administration to cut a free trade deal with Japan. He revealed that this was done intentionally to send a message to North Korea.

Pence said that the USA government is reviewing all of the trade agreements so that it could "ensure" they benefit not only its trading partners but also the American economy.
