Heading into their series against the San Jose Sharks, the big question for the Edmonton Oilers was if they could hang with last year's Stanley Cup finalists defensively. After the first intermission, the Sharks outshot the Oilers 34-9 the rest of the way and won 3-2 in overtime.
Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid scored his first career National Hockey League playoff goal in his team's to a 2-0 first-round Game 2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Friday. San Jose was 1 for 6 with the man advantage while Edmonton was 1 for 3.
Over the past decade, as the Oilers sat idle at this time of the year, the Sharks had reached postseason nine times, including losing in the Stanley Cup finals to the Penguins last year. "I don't think it's where we want it to be yet, but there were some good signs and some good opportunities". "This isn't going to be a short series".
Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot faced few quality scoring chances en route to the shut out. But, after that, it was all San Jose Sharks.
Couture said Oilers coach Todd McLellan "and that staff over there, they know what they're doing, and we're going to have to be better as well to beat them tomorrow night". "Whether you are happy with certain stretches of your game or not, we believed guys could step up and hit some levels and those guys' games just got better and better as the night went on".
Puck management, shift lengths and discipline were all hot topics for the Oilers on Thursday, all mistakes they feel are easily correctable.
Wrongful-death suits vs. Hernandez to go forward
Aaron Hernandez's lawyer says he intends to conduct his own investigation into the National Football League star's hanging death. The state said he jammed the door shut from the inside, to buy an extra few minutes in case anyone tried to keep him from dying.
"It was great", he said of their Game 1 comeback. Hertl led the way for the Sharks with three shots on goal. Milan Lucic, who got an assist on the Klefbom goal, then snapped a wrist shot past Jones at 17:07. On March 30 in Edmonton, the Sharks were almost flawless in the opening 10 minutes against the Oilers.
It was Edmonton's first playoff win since the spring of 2006.
"Now we know that when we get a lead we can lock it down and we know what it takes to play that way", said Talbot, who was named second star behind Kassian, who was a one-man wrecking crew in this one. Despite the Oilers small percentage in goals given up per game, their explosive offense makes up for that, finishing the regular season with the 8th most goals per game (2.96), while the Sharks finished with the 19th most goals per game (2.67).
"That's playoff hockey", said DeBoer.
"We did a good job of it last night".
"I like playing on the kill, especially in these games when we keep taking a lot (of penalties)". "We just have to worry about ourselves and what we've got going on, knowing our details and assignments". San Jose winger Joonas Donskoi had his power-play tip effort go off the post with a little more than seven minutes left, setting the stage for overtime. Another injured forward could return Friday in Joe Thornton, who sat out the last three regular-season contests as well as the series opener due to a knee issue. They started chanting "Let's Go Oilers" more than a half-hour before the game, and ambled along the concourses with their faces painted, wearing orange hard hats, orange wigs, and with Stanley Cups they had fashioned at home taped to their heads.
