Police: Fresno gunman targeting whites chose 3 men at random

Gunman kills three people at random in Fresno

Kori Ali Muhammad's criminal history includes arrests for gun possession, theft and drug charges.

David Jackson, 58, died at the scene.

Police were alerted to the scene Tuesday through ShotSpotter, a gunfire locator that detected multiple gunshots in the same vicinity, Dyer said Tuesday.

He was indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2005 for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm for drug trafficking and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, after a Fresno police officer searched his vehicle and found two large bags of cocaine, a loaded handgun and two rifles, court records show. A woman who identified herself as Taylor's grandmother said Tuesday that the family last saw him on Easter Sunday. All of his murder victims were white males.

Greer says Jackson was a military veteran.

Police allege Muhammad opened fire 17 times as he walked and ran along several blocks in Fresno, killing the three men in less than four minutes.

While working at a Motel 6, Williams and the suspect got into an argument, police said.

On Tuesday, police said, he acted on that hatred.

"That was going to be his target, and he caught up with him and he fired two rounds into this individual", Dyer said.

On a street in downtown, Fresno, Calif., he fired the first shots of his sick battle.

A psychiatrist who examined Muhammad believed he had psychosis, his lawyer said in the court filing.

Muhammad, 39, was arrested shortly after the rampage. "What I do know is this is an absolute tragedy that nobody will probably be able to make sense of because it stems from an individual who is filled with hate - filled with anger - who set out to shoot some individuals in our city today for no reason whatsoever other than what we believe to be (his own) hate".

Stephen Hughes, 66, said he and his wife rushed home Tuesday after receiving a frantic call from a neighbor.

Dyer says Muhammad claims he did so out of respect for the officer and to show the courage of conviction for his alleged crimes and the reasoning behind them.

The police chief says Muhammad hasn't shown any remorse other than saying sorry to Dyer during his arrest. He told investigators that he did not like white men and that "white people were responsible for keeping the black people down". Muhammad told police he worships seven gods.

Before Tuesday's events, Muhammad was already being sought in connection with the shooting death last week of Carl Williams, 25, a security guard at a Motel 6. Muhammad told investigators he felt disrespected.

"There was no statement made on Thursday night when he shot the security guard and killed him", Dyer said. Dyer says he watched detectives investigate, then left and hid by a dumpster. He continued saying that this shooting was "unprovoked". Police said he fired twice at that victim.

"He told her not to cry, he is still alive, and his magic was powerful, and he started laughing", Dyer said.

Kori Muhammad is a "calloused" racist who laughed while talking to police and his mother after admitting to fatally shooting three white men north of downtown Fresno on Tuesday, police Chief Jerry Dyer said. They spoke. The man then picked up the gun and fled.

Another victim, a 37-year-old man, had just picked up a bag of groceries Tuesday at a Catholic Charities building when he was gunned down.

Along with the three he's accused of killing on Tuesday, cops said, Muhammad also allegedly murdered a white Motel 6 security guard last week.

Prosecutors say the suspect in a racially motivated shooting rampage in Fresno could be arraigned on murder charges by the end of the week.
