Phaneuf scores in OT as Senators tie series against Bruins

Ottawa Senators defenseman Dion Phaneuf is congratulated by teammate Ottawa Senators right wing Mark Stone on his goal during overtime of game two NHL Stanley Cup hockey playoff action against the B

Phaneuf set up two goals before scoring at 1:59 of overtime and the Ottawa Senators rallied past the Boston Bruins 4-3 on Saturday.

Through the first 20 minutes of play, the Senators outshot the Bruins by a 10-3 margin.

BOSTON (AP) - The Ottawa Senators needed a late rally in Game 2 to tie up their Eastern Conference quarterfinal matchup with the Boston Bruins.

I said yesterday in the preview that it would come down to goaltending, and in a series where both goalies have struggled and have sub-.900 save percentages, it might be Craig Anderson's third period stop on David Backes at the lip of the crease that made the difference. Given the success that line has enjoyed this season and the threat it poses, the Sens should be incredibly pleased they have thus far limited the damage. They're a good team even if though they're battling some injuries. That goal for Boston came at the end of a short 5-on-3 after the Senators took back-to-back penalties. "That's an All-World play", said interim coach Bruce Cassidy. The rugged winger thought he had the much smaller Senator lined up perfectly, but Karlsson simply spun away, did a 180-degree turn and fired the puck down low to Viktor Stalberg, setting up Ottawa's second goal. A few well-placed checks, body bumps and where-do-you-think-you're-going? thumpers directed Karlsson's way will not only get the Bruins energized, but allow the 17,565 denizens of TD Garden to express themselves vocally in a way that can only benefit the home team. Adjustments are made, however, just because he hasn't been completely satisfied with the way the Senators have played in the first two games, they're not about to throw in wrench in the game plan.

A better start for Boston.

"We'll have to find a way, regroup tomorrow and get ready to play in front of our fans and we're looking forward to that", he said. That's the strategy for a lot of guys, but it's just not that easy at times. That way at least he's not in the middle of the ice and now everybody is in scramble mode.

"Those are the fun games you like to play in". "But yeah, I think we can all be a little bit better". "It was very special, one of the most special moments I've lived as a coach because it's everybody. celebrating something that must have been very tough to live all year and it comes at a flawless time".

To Karlsson's credit he has become a more physical player over the years for a "skill guy" at the D-man position, so it's become much more of a challenge to discourage him with physicality.

NOTES: C David Krejci, who missed the first two games of the series with an upper body injury, returned for Boston. In addition to skating alongside Liles, Cross also took part on the Bruins' second power-play unit.

What will decide Wednesday night's game?

Help is on the way for the banged-up Boston Bruins as they fight to keep their Stanley Cup Playoff hopes alive.

The Senators will not be shocked to see a desperate Bruins team Wednesday.
