US-based construction and civil engineering company Bechtel has been awarded a deal for the delivery of the £170m HS2 Phase IIb project.
With that said, there remains a standstill period in which Mace is still able legally to challenge the decision, which means that a re-run could still take place.
"The withdrawal of CH2M from a major HS2 contract raises several questions which must be answered".
The contract in question refers to part of the high speed rail line known as phase 2b, which covers the construction of the Crewe to Manchester and West Midlands to Leeds lines.
CH2M chose to pull out of the procurement process at the end of last month after one of the losing bidders, Mace, threatened a legal action against the competition, commenting that it had "never seen a procurement process like this". In the event, USA-based CH2M announced its withdrawal on 29 March, saying it remained "fully committed to working with HS2 Ltd on delivering Phase 1 on time and within budget".
BP plugs leak at oil well in Alaska

Later today (April 19) Transport Secretary Chris Grayling and HS2 chairman Sir David Higgins will discuss the issue at the Commons' Transport Select Committee.
Following the choice unsuccessful bidder Mace objected to the award asking HS2 to address concerns it had over potential conflict of interest. CH2M's contract award came two weeks after HS2 selected CH2M's European managing director Mark Thurston to be its new chief executive.
Construction News also revealed that HS2 was understood to be looking into the part played by former HS2 chief of staff Christopher Reynolds in the USA engineering giant's tender for the deal.
An HS2 spokesman said: "HS2 Ltd can confirm that Bechtel are being taken forward to the next stage of the 2b Development Partner procurement process".
