Dustin Johnson says back is '85-90' percent, hitting 'better' than before injury

Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson said Monday he is hitting the ball better now than before he suffered the back injury that knocked him out of the Masters.

The World No. 1 withdrew from the Masters prior to teeing off in his opening round a day after injuring his back in a fall on the stairs of his rental home.

It was a huge disappointment for the USA star, who is in the form of his life and had won his three previous starts heading to Augusta.

"I was very happy with my practice session today. Hardly any issues. I would say its about 85, 90 per cent". Johnson, too, was disappointed to be relegated to the sidelines.

Johnson told Marksbury he laid on the couch and watched the Masters, but, "I didn't like watching though".

Johnson has pencilled in the Wells Fargo Championship in early May as his return date and confessed that things are heading in the right direction. He's even pummeling golf balls as far, or farther, than before he fell down some steps and wrenched his back, according to the Huffington Post's Jordan Schultz.

There's probably never a "good time" to get hurt, but this was especially disappointing for Johnson who had just won in three consecutive starts and was in in peak form for the season's first major. I've got a few weeks off, so there was just no point in rushing anything.
