Anne Hathaway's latest film, "Colossal", has been praised for its exploration of how women often face misogynist behavior from men who use their supposed generosity to get what they want. "I am to this day scared that the reason I didn't trust her the way I trust some of the other directors I work with is because she's a woman".
She continued: 'I'm so scared that I treated her with internalized misogyny. "And when I see a film directed by a man, I focus on what's right with it".
The actress also added that this mistrust of women's abilities, ingrained in her (and all of us) by society, has caused her to react this way to most female directors she has worked with.
Although she felt embarrassed to admit this, Hathaway said she feels it's important that it become a point of discussion on how sexism can leave an impact on the industry in ways we don't realize: "I'm getting red talking about this. I swear, if anyone near me even so much as whispers the sentence 'Women probably don't want to direct, ' my fist will fly as a reflex action". I, before I realised this, had actively tried to work with female directors.
Hathaway added: "I'm so scared that I treated her with internalised misogyny".

FinnCap retained Gemfields PLC (LON:GEM) as 'Corporate'
The Firm is engaged in the business of Retailing and associated activities (Retail) and Retail banking and insurance services. With 617,600 avg volume, 7 days are for Donaldson Incorporated (NYSE:DCI)'s short sellers to cover DCI's short positions.
"That journey is way harder than it should be", Hathaway said of women in Hollywood.
The actress, who recently wrapped filming on the all-female Oceans 8 reboot and will appear alongside Rebel Wilson in an upcoming remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels called Nasty Women, said she's working to overcome her mindset. 'It feels like a confession, but I think it's something we should talk about'. They get fewer opportunities to take their shot at top-grossing films and less leeway for their films to be well-received.
"I've never apologised to her about it", she said. "It wasn't an issue of professionalism, it wasn't an issue of ... nothing". It's hard to know where exactly to place the blame for that, but Anne now admits that during the making of the film, she didn't trust Scherfig the way she should have, and she thinks her unease came from buried judgments about women.
A representative for Scherfig told ABC News that the director responded to the interview by asking the rep "to express her love and admiration for Anne and her work".
