A look back at Earth Day

22 April 2017, 12:46 | Bernard Bryant

Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders.

This year, the Earth Day Network alongside the March for Science will host its Earth Day 2017 campaigns, which will focus on environmental and climate literacy in Washington, D.C., at the National Mall. With the funds it receives, the Earth Day Network can work on the ground with organisations to promote activities such as sapling use and seed distribution, urban forestry, agroforestry, and tree care training. "We need to empower everyone with the knowledge to inspire action in defense of environmental protection".

Earth Day is celebrated every year on 22 April, to honour our planet and shed a light on environmental issues that matter.

Although the environmental challenges of 1970, when Earth Day was founded, were issues such as air pollution and rivers so polluted they actually caught fire, Reopelle said Earth Day is more important now than ever.

It was created in the United States to increase public awareness of environmental problems and is now celebrated around the world. This brought together 20 million Americans nationwide. In 1990, the holiday went global, involving 200 million people in 141 countries.

Growing out of the burgeoning global environmental movement of the 1950s and 1960s, Earth Day played a pivotal role in shaping the modern environmental consciousness, moving it from counterculture to mainstream and helping drive the push towards recycling, fuel-efficient cars and renewable energy that we take for granted today.

The second, "Environmental Teach-in Toolkit", gives details on what an Earth Day teach-in can accomplish and how to effectively and efficiently organize one. By providing this literature, the network is hoping to help enact change and take steps toward progress.
