95% engineers in India unfit for software development jobs

Over 90% engineers in India not apt for software development jobs Study

The survey stated there is acute shortage of talent in the Information Technology (IT) sector and only 4.77% candidates can write correct logic for a programme.

At a time when the Indian IT industry is expressing concerns over the U.S. government's clampdown on the rules for H-1B visa, a new study came up with a shocking revelation that 95 percent engineers in India do not possess the prowess to take up software development jobs.

Over 36,000 engineering students from IT related branches of over 500 colleges took Automata - a Machine Learning based assessment of software development skills - and over 2/3 could not even write proper code.

And what the study unfolded was highly disturbing.

The assessment report also disclosed that only a meager of 1.4% can write the code functionally correct & efficient whereas over 60% of the chunk cannot even write the code. "India needs to catch up", said Aspiring Minds Co-Founder Varun Aggarwal.

There is a large skill gap between the engineers trained at IT institutes in India and the basic knowledge required to land jobs as software developers. 38% of the pie of job applications were in the field of software developers/web architects. The research study was conducted by Aspiring Minds, an employability assessment company. Times have become tougher with the tightening visa regimes in the United States and other countries like Australia and Singapore.

Indian IT industry veteran TV Mohandas Pai was once again seen defending Indian techies' capabilities. But one can not ignore the fact that Indian IT firms are struggling to make a mark in the global software market, owing to the rapid digital transformation to achieve automated processes.
