2 more charged in Michigan genital mutilation investigation

Another Doctor and Wife Arrested in Michigan For Female Genital Mutilation on Young Girls

The owner of a medical clinic and his wife are charged with participating in the female genital mutilation of young girls in Livonia.

Authorities say Dr. Attar owned Burhani Medical Clinic in Livonia, which is where a Detroit emergency room doctor who was arrested last week is accused of performing FGM on minor girls.

Female genital mutilation involves removing external female genitalia partially or in full, sometimes for religious or cultural reasons.

According to a federal complaint filed in the Eastern District of Michigan, Farida Attar assisted Nagarwala in performing some of the procedures.

Ailes denies the accusations saying "This is a retaliatory suit for the network's decision not to renew her contract". He pushed a populist, conservative-leaning point of view, and was quick to shout down those who disagreed with him.

Both defendants were arrested this morning and are scheduled to appear in federal court in Detroit this afternoon.

"According to the complaint, some of the minor victims traveled interstate to have the procedure performed". The FBI's Detroit Field Division has set up a tip line for anyone who has information pertaining to the illegal practice of FGM or Dr. Jumana Nagarwala, Fakhruddin Attar or Farida Attar at 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5984).

Nagarwala, who's reportedly a member of the Dawoodi Bohra community, an Indian Muslim sect, has denied she had mutilated the girls, claiming the procedure (which is illegal across the United States) is an acceptable religious practice in her culture. The records showed that Nagarwala made a series of phone calls to the family of a 7-year-old girl living in Minnesota. One of the girls in Minnesota was temporarily removed from the home but is now back with her parents. She says Nargawala pinched her in her genital area and was told not to talk about the procedure. She was given a medical exam, where the doctor noted several abnormalities and scar tissue on her genitalia. The girl has since been allowed to return to her parents. He said that she performs them on Friday evenings or Saturdays and does not charge. According to a Department of Justice statement, the three are believed to be the first people charged under federal law 18 U.S.C. 116, which criminalizes the practice. It's not known whether they have lawyers who could comment on the allegations.
