Tropical depression One is no threat to land but notable for its early formation

The first tropical depression of 2017 formed Thursday morning in the Atlantic Ocean.

Adrián Martínez Ortega of the State Coordination of Civil Protection (Coeproc), has been monitoring the subtropical depression which, he says, presents no danger to Quintana Roo.

A depression has a cyclonic circular motion with surface winds under 39 miles per hour.

The system has migrated from part tropical and part subtropical to a fully tropical system. It now poses no threat to land, the National Hurricane Center said.

A tropical storm has winds ranging from 39 to 73 miles per hour that rotate around a well-organized center that contains showers and thunderstorms. Subtropical Depression One as it's been named, has been detected, developing almost six weeks earlier than usual.

This is the third consecutive year that a storm has formed before the official start of hurricane season, which begins June 1.

But Mayfield said the change is status it is a testament to how far technology has come that forecasters can make the observations so far out to sea.

If the current system strengthens into a tropical storm, it would be named Arlene.
