Sturgeon softens attitude to timing of independence poll

But Ruth Davidson, the Scottish Tory leader, said the First Minister was effectively firing "the starting gun" this week on another independence referendum campaign and argued this was "utterly irresponsible" when she has no plan on issues such as the currency.

The basic logic behind this referendum is absurd.

The British Government's Scotland Minister, David Mundell, said May's Administration "will not be entering into discussions or negotiations" about a new referendum on Scottish independence.

Bank of America suggest these receipts could improve given the rebound in oil prices through 2016 but they are unlikely to reach previous heights towards $100 in some previous years.

"If Scotland can be ignored on an issue as important as our membership of the European Union and the single market, then it is clear that our voice and our interests can be ignored at any time and on any issue".

Scotland is a country where the dominant political current ensures that the hand of friendship is extended to migrants and refugees, unlike south of the border in England where a xenophobic, nativist, anti-migrant hysteria has taken root to the point where it is now driving the United Kingdom government's path towards a so-called hard Brexit - one that will involve no deal or caveats when it comes to retaining any kind of economic relationship with the EU.

Callum McCaig, the SNP MP for Aberdeen South, was more explicit, telling a pro-independence website that the "halfway house" of EFTA had "some pretty strong merits" and should be taken seriously.

The ratings firm had predicted in 2014 that an independent Scotland could be handed a credit rating of Baa, just one notch above sub-investment grade. This would bring with it other clear drawbacks.

"There are also a lot of folk, like me, who joined the SNP because it was strongly pro-EU".

Her reasoning for doing so is the intransigence of UK Prime Minister Theresa May's government in refusing to countenance the prospect of Scotland being given leave to secure a separate arrangement with Brussels, whereby it could retain its membership of the single market regardless of Brexit.

Single Market membership, however, would of course still involve free movement of people and being subject to the EU's judiciary.

The SNP's logic makes no sense, because it is nothing more than an excuse for another referendum, at what they consider an opportune moment. There was none of the obfuscation for which Quebec's referendums on independence from Canada were famous (like the 106-word question in the 1980 referendum that did not even mention the word "independence"). One message from the independence and European Union referendums was that people wanted more control over their lives.

"The SNP is not Scotland and they are acting against the majority wishes of the people of Scotland".

This all comes after a period of rising tensions between Nicola Sturgeon and Theresa May.

"The SNP is trying to frame this as Scotland against the Tories", he said at his office in Edinburgh earlier this month. They were also, for that matter, wanted by the majority of the public.

In a 2014 referendum, Scottish voters rejected independence by a margin of 55 percent to 45 percent.

The SNP claim that any referendum would be at the end of the negotiations is specious. She is right to do so.

The SNP likes to talk about the united "voice of Scotland" that is being ignored by the nasty Tories.

"Nobody is proposing that there should be a referendum held right now".

The Scottish Parliament is expected next week to back Sturgeon's call for a new vote.

However, with May not rebuking previous statements that Article 50 would be triggered last week, it has fuelled speculation that she has been affected by sentiments coming out of Holyrood. Theresa May provoked a backlash by claiming that it was the wrong time to hold a fresh referendum in 2018/19 - despite the looming deadline of Scotland being dragged out of the European Union following the 62 per cent vote to remain.

"The Tories and our opponents have been spreading fake news for years about our economy, our resources and the kind of future that we could build if Scotland chose an independent future". Only the SNP gets to decide what the "voice of Scotland" is.

Brexit has presented Scottish nationalism with challenges they must deal with before pressing ahead with their cause.
