The spacecraft are continuing to beam wonderful images of the red planet's surface back to Earth, and some of the probes have even solved Martian mysteries in the process.

The images were taken by a camera onboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a probe that has been exploring the red planet from above for the past 11 years. These images have been converted by a Finish filmmaker into a stunning short video of the Red Planet.

These images come from NASA's HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) camera, which allows scientists to distinguish physical features on Mars down to around three feet tall. The data contain information about the topography of the surface of the Red Planet. He even would like to see photos captured by a landscape photographer on Mars, particularly the polar regions.

The glorious images are complemented by sound effects including the occasional blast of rocket thrusters.

The film features the Martian moon Phobos at the beginning and then highlights the notable plains, buttes, craters and other remarkable landforms. Fröjdman says that he couldn't find any software that would automate the process, but he might be kicking himself at the moment. He said that the most time-consuming was to select by hand over 33,000 reference points in the anaglyph images.

For now, however, we're just going to have to make do with photos sent back from the red planet from the high-powered robots checking out Mars on our behalf. Fröjdman not just combined tens of thousands of images but also touched them up to give an accurate sense of how Mars would look if we approached from above. But I'm afraid it will not be possible in my lifetime, "says the videographer, relayed by kottke".
