Comey Delivers Political Gut Punch to President Trump

MARCH 15 2017 FILE

FBI Director James Comey began his opening statement to the House Intelligence Committee in Monday's highly anticipated hearing on Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election with the revelation that his agency was investigating potential ties between President Trump's campaign and Russian efforts to influence the election.

FBI Director James Comey appeared on Monday before a panel of Congress members looking into possible intelligence breaches, allegations of Russian hacking, and links between Moscow and Trump's campaign. "We have looked carefully inside the F.B.I.", he added, but said the agency has not found anything to verify Trump's claims.

"The Department of Justice has asked me to share with you that the answer is the same for the Department of Justice and all its components", Comey said. Comey has previously refused to confirm or deny the existence of any investigation exploring possible connections between Trump associates and Russian Federation, as the Bureau does not publicly discuss its work.

Russian Federation denies it attempted to influence the 8 November presidential election.

Also being looked into are the ongoing intelligence leaks of classified information, an issue the President has repeatedly said should be investigated.

In this clip, both Comey and National Security Agency head Michael Rogers tell the committee that they don't have evidence that Russian Federation interfered with the voting process in swing states last fall.

Earlier during the hearing, Senator Devin Nunes, the Republican chairman of the committee, debunked Mr Trump's claim that his predecessor listened in on his communications, but did not rule out other surveillance methods.

Providers warn achieving 2017-18 performance targets now 'mission impossible'
The combination of trying to reach these targets in addition to funding reductions is something that is now "mission impossible", Hopson explained.

TrumPutin has not commented since news of Comey's testimony broke, but as late as Friday, the president has continued to perpetuate the lie that former President Obama tapped his office at Trump Tower. Also of interest to the committee are any connections between Russian Federation and associates of President Donald Trump.

"There was circumstantial evidence of collusion; there is direct evidence, I think, of deception", Schiff said on NBC's "Meet the Press". During the hearing, lawmakers discussed the leaking of information about former White House National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, who was forced to resign last month after less than a month on the job.

Comey and Stone-who, of course, had been sitting there the entire time and didn't know about the tweet-had to hear it a few times before denying Trump's characterization of their remarks.

Minutes later, Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the intelligence committee, responded. In Jan. 2017, the intelligence community released a report that claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin, 64, wanted to harm Hillary Clinton's, 69, campaign while undermining the legitimacy of the 2016 election.

"To put in a homely metaphor, I hate the New England Patriots, and no matter who they play, I'd like them to lose".

"Many of Trump's campaign personnel, including the president himself, have ties to Russia and Russian interests".

He also posted, "The real story that Congress, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and all others should be looking into is the leaking of Classified information".
