The Dalai Lama, Tibet's spiritual leader, inaugurated a three-day global Buddhist conference Friday in Nalanda district in Bihar, India.

Such moves would disrupt bilateral ties, the foreign ministry said.

Over 350 delegates from 35 countries are participating in the conference that included a discussion on women in Buddhism.

The Ministry of Culture in India said in a statement that the Dalai Lama and Minister of Culture Mahesh Sharma inaugurated the conference on Friday.

The spokeswoman added: "We urge the India side to clearly recognise the anti-China separatist nature of the Dalai clique, abide by its promises on the Tibet issue, respect China's core interests and avoid further disturbances and harm to China-India relations". Mukherjee met with the Dalai Lama in December, causing China to say it was "strongly dissatisfied".

Beijing regards the Dharamshala-based Dalai Lama as a "separatist" and is sensitive to him meeting global leaders, attending official functions or visiting places at the invitation of the Indian government.

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama today lauded the secularism of India saying that no country could match it in term of its strict adherence to the principles of secularism. China has set its teeth against the Dalai Lama visit to Tawang area of Arunachal Pradesh, which it claims to be its own territory.

The Spokesperson, however, said, China's opposition against THAAD missile defence system deployed in South Korea was clear and consistent. "The Dalai-clique has always been engaging in anti-China separatist activities and its record on the border question is not that good", he added.

In his speech at Friday's event, the Dalai Lama remembered the time 60 years ago when then premier Zhou Enlai sent him to Nalanda with the relics of ancient Chinese traveller Xuan Zang to offer to prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

The Nobel Peace Prize-winning Dalai Lama, who fled into exile in India after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, denies espousing violence and says he only wants genuine autonomy for his remote Himalayan homeland.
